The First Probably 17th Century, The Second Mid-18th Century
The first in excavated condition, comprising the upper part of a single-edged blade of triangular section, heavy brass quillon-block of pyramidal form, cast in one with small downcurved quillons and inlaid with a trellis design against a hatched ground in silver or pewter, and tapering bone grip (split and damaged) of rectangular section originally fitted with a pommel-cap (missing); the second of hardened blackened leather (minor damage) with silver locket and chape, the former engraved with foliage centred on a small cast grotesque mask on each side, and with a ring for suspension (2)
