A Fine Pair Of 20-Bore Silver-Mounted Flintlock Holster Pistols

With bright barrels (minor pitting) in three stages signed along the breeches and with raised mouldings at the rear grooved for sighting, grooved tangs engraved with foliage, signed bright rounded locks with raised borders, cocks and steels en suite, moulded highly figured full stocks (fore-ends old replacements) each carved with a shell behind the barrel tang, cast and chased mounts comprising pierced foliate rococo side-plates, shaped vacant escutcheons with grotesque mask above, pommels each with engraved spurs and grotesque mask cap, trigger-guards with first pattern acorn finial, turned ramrod-pipes, and iron-capped ramrods, London proof marks and maker's mark (2)

Joseph Clarkson received his freedom of the Gunmakers' Company by redemption in 1715. A maker of crossbows as well as firearms, his last recorded payment of rent appears to be in 1749. See W. Keith Neal and D.H.L. Back, Great British Gunmakers 1540-1740, p. 461
