A 20-Bore Silver-Mounted Flintlock Holster Pistol

With barrel retaining faint traces of signature within a drop-shaped panel along the breech flat and stamped with Irish registration number beyond, silver fore-sight (rubbed), gold-lined touch-hole, tang engraved with foliage and rococo ornament, border engraved flat bevelled lock (cock an old replacement) signed within a foliated scroll (signature refreshed) and decorated with a flowerhead on the stepped tail, gold-lined pan and steel, figured full stock carved with a shell behind the barrel tang, cast and chased mounts comprising side-plate pierced with flowering foliage centred on a draped ledge, foliate escutcheon engraved with owner's crest of Mountjoy, an earl's coronet above, spurred pommel with linked scallopshells and grotesque mask cap, trigger-guard engraved with a flowerhead on the bow and with foliate finial, turned ramrod-pipes, and ramrod with long horn tip (some wear and rust patination), London proof marks and indistinct maker's mark

Footnotes

Joseph Griffin was turned over to his father in 1741 and was free of the Gunmakers' Company in 1750. He was appointed Gentleman Armourer to His Majesty's Stables-in-Ordinary in 1760 and was elected Master of the Gunmakers' Company in 1761 and 1763. He was in partnership with his father until 1770 and with John Tow between 1772-82. He died in 1784
