With two-stage barrels each turned at the girdle and signed 'E. Smart' in front of a foliate scroll on the breeches, grooved foliate engraved tangs, border engraved rounded locks signed in script and decorated with a foliate scroll the tail, rounded cocks en suite, moulded figured full stocks (one butt repaired either side of the trigger-guard tang) carved with a trefoil behind the barrel tangs, cast and chased mounts comprising engraved scrolled side-plates each with large foliate terminal, escutcheons engraved with owner's monogram and with a grotesque mask above and below, spurred pommels (one spur repaired) engraved with a foliate scroll on each side and each with grotesque mask cap, trigger-guards (one an old replacement) with foliate finials above a demi grotesque mask, turned baluster ramrod-pipes, and horn-tipped ramrods, London proof marks and maker's mark (2)

Francis Smart was apprenticed to Godfrey Taylor in 1686, and free of the Gunmakers' Company in 1693. He was gunmaker to the Office of Ordnance 1695-1720, to the Hudson's Bay Company 1715-1724, and to the Royal African company 1707-1717. The last documentary reference to him is in 1725
