A Fine And Rare Caucasian Shamshir
Dated 1907

With curved single-edged blade fullered along the back for most of its length on each side, the forte on one side chiselled with a panel containing an Arabic prayer, a cartouche incised with a bird above, and on the other with further calligraphic cartouche above a circular panel incised with a lion, the hilt entirely covered in nielloed silver-gilt finely embossed and chased with scrolling foliage against a stippled ground, the quillon-block with pointed langets set with a piece of faceted red glass on one side, engraved bud-shaped quillon terminals, and pommel formed as a bridled horse's head on the round, in original scabbard en suite with the hilt, the outside set with four pieces of faceted red glass, the inside nielloed with designs of foliage, the locket with nielloed Arabic inscription 'Work of Sultan' followed by a Turkish phrase or name, and indistinctly signed 'Work of ... Ughli', the mid-section with an Arabic inscription 'There is no youth [as brave as] 'Ali. There is no Sword [as sharp as] Dhu'l-faquar', the chape inscribed 'Ali' above the date within a wreath, large ovoidal suspension mount, and retaining most of its original gilding
