Two Persian Circular Steel Dhals
Qajar, Late 19th Century

The first of convex form and made in two parts, with four engraved domed bosses and an applied brass border, decorated centrally on the outside with shaped panels within gold-damascened borders each enclosing encrusted silver foliage, the rim with ovoidal and circular panels of chiselled and silver-damascened Persian verses in cursive script between slender borders of running arabesques and foliage; the second of similar form, the other surface etched and silver-damascened with foliage inhabited by animals, figures in Persian dress and horned demons, the rim with cursive script, the inside retaining its red fabric lining (silver tarnished, surface rust overall) (2)
