A Rare .451 Whitworth Patent Percussion Target Rifle And Cased Set Of Sights
By The Manchester Ordnance & Rifle Co., No. D508, Circa 1862-65

With reblued barrel cut with Whitworth rifling, engraved 'Whitworth Patent' at the breech, and with fore-sight and back-sight mounts, the latter signed along one side, the muzzle with standing pin for the false muzzle, breech (some light pitting) with platinum plug, tang with mount for the Vernier folding peep-sight, signed detented lock with safety-catch in front of the rounded hammer and engraved with the company mark on the tail, highly figured half-stock with chequered pistol-grip (old repair) and fore-end (split on one side), each with dark horn cap, reblued steel mounts comprising chequered butt-plate and serial numbered trigger-guard, vacant silver escutcheon, chequered trigger, and no provision for a ramrod, Birmingham proof marks; the sights serial numbered to the rifle and comprising signed Vernier sight, patent ladder sight, windage-adjustable fore-sight with three interchangable elements, an eye-piece, and a miniature spanner (some pieces missing): in their black leather-covered fitted case lined in green baize (3)
