A Scottish Officer's Basket-Hilted Backsword
The Hilt In The Manner Of John Simpson The Younger Of Glasgow, The Blade By Samuel Harvey Of Birmingham, Dated 1762

With tapering blade double-edged over half its length to the point and fullered over its entire length on each side with a narrow fuller bordering it along the back, the forte incised with crowned 'GR' monogram on each side, iron guard of fluted bars of rectangular section involving finely fretted fluted panels (one side panel incomplete) pierced with circles and stylised hearts, and with an oval aperture for the reins, fluted fore-guards, small scrolled wrist-guard, fluted conical pommel with button finial, wooden grip (some worming) bound with twisted brass wire and with remains of fishskin covering, and leather liner faced in red baize (some rust patination overall)
