An Unusual Scottish 'Transitional' Basket-Hilted Broadsword
Late 17th Century

With earlier broad tapering double-edged blade with double central fuller over each side of the forte stamped with letters, an incised running wolf mark beyond on one side, and an orb and cross mark on the other, rectangular ricasso incised with lines and struck with a mark on one side, iron guard of flattened bars of square section framing ovoidal panels and saltires, the latter each incised with a diamond pattern centred on a pierced square, fore-guards, short scrolled wrist-guard, fluted conical pommel, and later leather-covered grip (rust patinated overall)
