By Uli Zeisberg
Idar-Oberstein, Germany
Unlike their Mexican cousins, Oregon fire opals can frequently appear cloudy and lackluster. This beauty from Oregon is full of life due its expert cutting, known as a barion square-cut. Basil Watermeyer of Johannesburg, South Africa was the inventor of the barion concept thirty years ago. The Barion cut was the forerunner of the princess cut and was originally used for faceting diamonds. The first barions were square shaped stones with step cut crowns and barion pavilions faceted from diamond. The cut has since been extended to colored stones and virtually all of the standard shapes. Weighing approximately 13.72 carats and measuring 15.5 x 15.5 x 11.5mm.
