Coralium elatium, Mediterannean Sea
A very versatile set of four continuous necklaces which can either be worn individually or as a set or doubled up as a choker, combining tubular beads of natural color black coral from the South Pacific and bright red coral from Sardinia. Black coral is found in various deepwater tropical habitats of the South Pacific and more than 150 species have been recorded. Black coral has been harvested for centuries for its amuletic and medicinal powers. Its family name, antipathies means “against suffering.” Early Hawaiians ground black coral branches into medicinal powder and later began using it in jewelry. In 1987, black coral was designated as Hawaii’s State gem. Length 42in
