Raptor Nest with Embryos

Raptorid
Cretaceous
Nanxiang Basin, Guandong Province, China

Exceptionally well preserved, and numerous, embryos distinguish a raptorid egg nest. Nineteen (19) of the eggs contain embryonic remains--an extraordinary number in comparison to other raptorid egg nests. Ten (10) of the embryos are superb examples, some showing a remarkable degree of articulation, including the presence of preserved yolks in four (4.) One egg has been removed from the nest for study; the skull from this egg is still inflated and articulated, missing only the left squamosal, quadrate, quadratojugal, lacrymals, maxillae and premaxillae. Together with the other skull bones uncovered in the other eggs, over 85% of the bones of the embryonic skull have been accounted for. As large egg nests can seldom be removed in one piece, portions of the matrix have most likely been restored; all restoration in the present specimen is of, or above, museum quality. Identification of the species of the specimen is to be revealed in a published scientific study. Measures 27 x 24 x 12in
