Nest of Nine Dinosaur Eggs
Dendroolithus
Late Cretaceous
Hennan Province, China
One of the finest nests ever offered at auction, several beautifully preserved, nearly complete Hadrosaur (duckbill dinosaur) eggs distinguish a partial egg nest. Hadrosaurs typically laid 63 eggs per nest. The young were born with incompletely fused femurs and would have required care and protection during a formative period. Hence, Hadrosaurs are regarded as communal dinosaurs. Living in massive herds, duckbill dinosaurs are believed to have exhibited markings through color or color pattern in order to identify each other. The present specimen was featured in the May, 1996 issue of National Geographic.
