Fossil Horse

Mesohippus
Oligocene
White River Badlands, Wyoming

Mesohippus is an early member of the Perissodactyls (odd-toe) Equid (or horse) family. It had 3 toes on its feet. It was a small animal standing about 2 feet high (about the size of a greyhound). Its face was longer than earlier equids; its eyes were rounder and set wider apart and farther back. The teeth were larger and more plentiful. Its brain was larger than its predecessors and more like that of a modern horse. A quick and agile herding animal, Mesohippus also had a long tail. The present specimen shows moderate reconstruction. Mounted on a metal stand. Measures 42in
