Mammal Snout
Oreodont
Oligocene
White River Badlands, South Dakota
Leptauchenia is an oreodont, though different from Meryciododon. While Meryciododon’s habitat was the open range, Leptauchenia may have, based on the placement of the eyes, lived at least part of its life in the water (animals with the orbit, or eye socket, as high as Leptauchenia generally lived in water, with eyes placed so that they could see above the water line.) However, the feet suggest a terrestrial lifestyle. It was smaller than Meryciododon but had a bigger head. The present snout is offered on a custom stand. Measures 2 ½ x 9 x 2 ¾in
