Saber-toothed Cat Skull

Dinictis squalidens
Oligocene
White River Badlands, South Dakota

In the area now known as the White River Badlands, there were two prominent cats during the Oligocene, Dinictis and Hoplophoneus; each had different hunting tactics. Dinictis, the smaller and more agile of the two, aggressively hunted smaller animals. Hoplophoneus pursued larger prey and may have employed ambush-style tactics. Unlike modern cats, Dinictis walked flat-footed. It belongs to the family Nimravid and may be the ancestor to the modern Mountain Lion and Puma. Skull measures 5 ½ x 4 ½ x 4in Stand measures 6 x 4 ¼ x 3 ½in
