White River Badlands, South Dakota
In the area now known as the White River Badlands, there were two prominent cats during the Oligocene, Dinictis and Hoplophoneus; each had different hunting tactics. Dinictis, the smaller and more agile of the two, aggressively hunted smaller animals. Hoplophoneus pursued larger prey and may have employed ambush-style tactics. Unlike modern cats, Dinictis walked flat-footed. It belongs to the family Nimravid and may be the ancestor to the modern Mountain Lion and Puma.
