Woolly Mammoth Jaw

Mammuthus primigenius
Pleistocene, about 35,000 years old
Holland

A beautifully preserved lower jaw of a mammoth clearly displays well-defined ridges, or laminae that helped crush food. Like elephants, Woolly Mammoths are thought to have grown more than one set of molars during their lifetime. The present specimen is, as evidenced by the lack of wear, either from a younger adult mammoth, or from a newer set of teeth of an older mammoth. Measures 21 x 20 x 9 1/2in
