Giant Beaver Dentary

Castoroides ohioensis
Pleistocene, 10,000 years old
Florida

Ranging from Alaska to Florida, Castoroides ohioensis, or the Giant Beaver, was the largest rodent in North America during the Ice Age. The size of today’s black bear, its teeth displayed more prominent ridges than modern beavers and were useful as powerful cutters and gougers. They preferred lakes and ponds near swamps, as evidenced by the number of specimens found in swamps. Unable to build dams as modern beavers do, the tail of the Giant Beaver was longer and narrower. Dentary measures 6 ¾ x 2 x 4 ½in Stand measures 5 x 3 x 3in
