Mixosaurus panxianensis
Middle Triassic
Guanling Formation, Panxian County, China
A beautifully preserved adult belonging to the Mixosauridae family displays the characteristic small, long body of this early member of the Ichthyosaur family. Unlike its later relatives, its tail does not bend. It may have possessed small dorsal and tail fins. Ichthyosaurs were marine reptiles and, as evidenced by incomplete European specimens, gave birth to live young. As illustrated by the present specimen, Mixosaurus specimens from China are more complete than the European examples. This is a virtually complete specimen with just a few bones missing.
