Thililua sp.
Cretaceous
Goulmima region, Morocco
There are two basic groups of plesiosaurs; one is the long-necked, short-skulled plesiosaur, which includes Plesiosaurus and Elasmosaurus. The other is the Pliosaur, which is the short-necked, long-skulled plesiosaur. Both groups are known from the Late Cretaceous of Morocco, though minimal scientific research has been performed on them because significant material has only recently been discovered. Like all plesiosaurs, Thililua had four large paddles, was a fast swimmer and was an ambush attacker. Its long skull allowed it to catch larger prey. However, Thililua, unlike other pliosaurs, exhibited a long neck and well as a long skull. Teeth of plesiosaurs have been on the market for years and, for some time, experts doubted that skull or skeletal remains would ever be found. In the last five years, several new genera and species have been discovered and more are being studied. The original bone of the present specimen has been inlaid into a faux matrix. Skull measures 37in
