Stylemys
is a successful tortoise from the Oligocene with few enemies. The present specimen exhibits well defined individual shell pieces, with some compression. Turtles made their appearance on Earth at about the same time as dinosaurs and crocodiles. In studying turtle skulls, it is seen that the turtle is similar to very primitive early reptiles. Yet the skeleton is more similar to that of lizards, and DNA studies show a closer relationship to crocodiles. Turtle measures 5 x 4 x 1in. Matrix measures 4 x 4 x 3 ¼in
