Permian Amphibians

Discosaurus sp.
Early Permian.
Czech Republic

Discosaurus was an early amphibian, unrelated to modern amphibians. Fully aquatic, it had external gills, like that of a mud-puppy salamander. But unlike the salamander, which has a soft skin, the skin of Discosaurus was scaly and rough. Less than a foot long, Discosaurus was an active hunter in lakes and ponds. The present specimen exhibits two individuals overlapping on the original matrix. Measures 13 x 10 x 1in
