Prodigious Garfish

Lepisosteus atrox
Eocene
Green River Formation, Fossil Butte Member, Lincoln Co., Wyoming

Among the rarest of all fossil fish from this world famous locality, few Lepisosteus atrox attain the extreme size of the present specimen. Alligator-like in appearance, the ancient predatory fish is covered in large ganoid scales and presents a distinctive three-dimensional appearance. The natural bone color varies from translucent ambers and browns to deep blacks. The extraordinary size of the teeth expresses the formidable nature of this aquatic Eocene carnivore; at the top of the food chain, its only enemy may have been the crocodile. In the past 100 years, a mere handful of gars have been recovered that measure over 5 feet in length. Complete, with very minor restoration where cracks may have been. One of the largest ever found. Speciman measures 63in Matrix measures 42 x 85in
