Gosiutichthys gets its name from a prehistoric lake named Gosiute, where the majority of these fish were found. It was a schooling fish and belongs to the same family as Knightia, the Clupeidae. The present specimen is a small portion of a larger death assemblage; therefore, its death was most likely caused by a catastrophic occurrence such as a landslide or temperature inversion which caused the death of many fish at the same time.
