Lobe-Fin Tetrapod

Osteolepis macrolepidotus
Devonian
Old Red Sandstone, Orkney, Scotland

A transition animal between fishes and amphibians, the Devonian lobe-fin “fish” could “walk” with its lobe fins and possessed an internal nostril that allowed it to gulp air without bringing its mouth out of water. Fish-like, heavily enameled scales and skull bones complete its primitive appearance. A well preserved, complete specimen and rare display piece. Specimen measures 6in
