Dipterus valenciennesi
Middle Devonian
Old Red Sandstone, Caithness, Northern Scotland
An extremely well preserved lungfish specimen displays an abundance of notable features: the head is especially well preserved, with the many individual skull bones readily visible; each fin ray on the caudal (rear) fins is superbly defined; the scales of the body and lateral line are well defined. Lungfish are one of the longest lasting groups of fish. This small predator swam slowly along the bottom of the ocean, darting in and out of crevices in search of crustaceans, smaller fish and invertebrates. Measures 9 ½ x 8 x ¼in
