The body skeleton of this type of fish is made up of cartilage and is therefore rarely preserved. In the present extraordinary specimen, the dorsal fin and the long, tapering tail are well preserved. The specimen also displays well defined eye sockets, or orbits. Coccosteus cuspidata is a Placoderm, belonging to the active predatory order, Arthrodira, Family Coccosteidae. Its skull and trunk are made up of individual armored plates. Measures 15 ½ x 7 ½ x 1in
