Seirocrinus subangularis
Lower Jurassic
Holzmaden, Germany
Commonly known as a fossil sea lily, Seirocrinus was, in fact, an animal. Its plant-like morphology evolved to feed on plankton from its marine environment, reaching downward into the water from a floating piece of driftwood on which it was attached. Crinoids belong to the echinoderm group, which includes starfish, sand dollars and sea urchins. The present specimen displays three distinct individuals intertwined and attached to a piece of fossil wood. The iron pyrite replacement adds to the aesthetic appeal of this superlative piece. Measures 30 x 56in
