Large Ammonite Plaque

Goniatite, Manticoceras sp.
Late Devonian
Morocco

Gonatites are related to ammonites. Possessing eight arms and large eyes, they sneaked up on their prey and attacked it using their long arms, like the modern octopus. Unable to escape, their prey would meet their demise via the Gonatites’ strong beak. The present plaque displays numerous Manticoceras sp. of various sizes. These are Ammonoids, not true Ammonites. The specimens are unpolished, while the base is polished. The matrix is roughed, providing interesting texture. An attractive, highly decorative piece.
Specimen measures 34 x 31 x 8 ½in Stand measures 34 ¼ x 15 x 4in Specimen measures 34 x 31 x 8 ½in Stand measures 34 ¼ x 15 x 4in
