Large Double Trilobite
Paradoxides sp.
Middle Cambrian
Anti-Atlas Mountain Range, Morocco
Paradoxides sp. belongs to one of the first orders of trilobites, the Redlichiida. When Paradoxides sp. lived, 550 million years ago, it had few predators. Neither vertebrates nor cephalopods had yet appeared. Trilobites scurried across the ocean floor, their antennae searching the currents for signs of food and danger. Some hid between rocks and crevices, others dug burrows; some curled up in balls, and others used spines to keep enemies at bay. The larger species’ size was both an offensive and defensive advantage. The present plaque displays two large trilobites, one lying over the other. Some restoration. Largest specimen measures 11 ½ in Matrix measures 17 x 13 x 1 ½ in
