Gold Nugget Brooch

California
The gold rushes of Alaska, California, South Africa and Australia around the mid-nineteenth century spawned the manufacture of commemorative jewelry to be worn by the average person. Small, but natural gold nuggets were used frequently as brooches. This very pretty placer nugget, now mounted as a brooch, was probably created for this purpose. Weighing approximately 0.465 ozt (14.5 grams)
