Ten pyrite suns, measuring up to 5 ½ inches, stud this impressive shale plate. These unique pyrite “suns” are found in the coal mines of Sparta, Illinois. Of the seven or so coal seams that are near to Sparta, Illinois, only one is still operating. Shale layers between coal seams are host to radiating pyrite crystallites called pyrite “suns”. Bright brassy gold against the velvet black of the shale, these plates are visually stunning examples of natural art. The extremely large plate measures an impressive 4 ft 9 in x 25 in, weighs approximately 70 pounds.
