A group of 17 costume design sketches created by multiple Academy AwardR-winning Hollywood designer, Charles Le Maire, for the 1938-1939 season of The Ringling Brothers circus. Rendered on onion paper in watercolor and pencil, these whimsical drawings show characters from around the world and from different eras including a medieval knight, a Spanish dancer, a Native American and a court jester among many others. Also included is an archive of Le Maire's notes about this project, a letter to him from Henry Ringling North and a circus industry magazine from 1939 with an article about these particular Le Maire costume sketches.
