Four pastel drawings of the Beatles, 1964, pastel on black paper by Nicholas Volpe, each signed at lower right by the artist, and lower left with each member's signature traced by the artist from the Beatles' signatures given to Volpe during the sitting. When Volpe was commissioned to do the portraits, he had already enjoyed an illustrious career as an artist, painting the portraits of many famous celebrities. He won a Grammy in 1958 for Best Album Design for his portrait of Frank Sinatra on "Only the Lonely." He also had a lifetime contract to do portraits each year of the actor and actress who won Oscars for Best Performance. Millions of reproduction lithographs have been made and sold in the United States from these originals. Volpe met the Beatles in New York in 1964, shortly after they arrived there for their famous appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. These are the originals from that sitting.
