1943, gouache on trimmed celluloid depicting Donald Duck with Jose Carioca, applied to a wooden background, matted and framed.
In 1941, Disney was having some financial difficulties and could not count on the bank for additional funds. It was at this time that Disney was asked by the Inter-American Affairs office in the US State Department to make a goodwill trip to South America. Disney was not convinced until the Government offered him the funds for the trip and for making four or five shorts. This was an offer he couldn’t refuse.
This short is the first appearance of Jose Carioca. He is delighted to finally meet the famous Donald Duck. Donald Duck is impressed by how Jose Carioca plays his umbrella like a flute. Donald gives it a try, but the umbrella repeatedly opens up.
