Footnotes

PROVENANCE:
The Leger Galleries, London.
Chinnery arrived in India in 1802 and mainly confined his talents to the lucrative practise of portraiture in oils. He did however, produce some landscape drawings and these bear an intimacy not found in his portraits.

The chowkidar or village watchman is identified by his shield and usually sits or stands by his thannah or sentry box.
