William Daniell never visited Sri Lanka but received from his brother, Samuel Daniell many sketches and drawings relating to the country. Many of these were later published in 'A Picturesque Illustration of the Scenery, Animals and Native Inhabitants of the Island of Ceylon', 1807.

The Sri Lankan Paradise Flycatcher, Terpsiphone paradisi is a bird of remarkable beauty and is here depicted perched in an Indian Coral tree, Erythrina bidwillii.
