Namcheong (Chinese, fl.1840-1870)

A laden junk at anchor, Whampoa
oil on canvas
39.4 x 50.8 cm. (15 1/2 x 20 in.)

Footnotes

Whampoa anchorage was the furthest navigable point on the Pearl river for ocean going vessels, so it was here that cargo was unloaded into smaller native craft for the journey up river to Canton.

Namcheong used Whampoa as the setting for many of his works and it was here that it has been suggested he established his studio.
