Footnotes
Marciano Antonio Baptista was born to a Portuguese Macau family, his father being a captain of one of the famous Lorchas of Macau. He was educated at the seminary of Sao Jose and from the 1840s was copying drawings by George Chinnery.
His work came to the attention of the European community when they were used to illustrate an Illustrated London News article in March 1857, in which he is described as a "student of Chinnery". He depicted many views of the South China coast; Macau, Hong Kong, Canton and Foochow among others.
