Chow Kwa was an artist with a studio in Shanghai and was active between 1850 and 1885, his panoramic views show busy traffic on the Huangpu River and the moored US paddle steamer is a particularly distinctive motif.

The present view can be dated to circa 1865 as it shows the Bund being well developed and the Heard building as a three storey edifice.
