William Swainson was a fellow of the Royal Society and a noted zoologist and botanist, who published many works. He arrived in New Zealand in 1840 having purchased a 300 acre property at the Hutt, he then travelled extensively throughout New Zealand and Australia making observations and recording the flora and fauna.
