Footnotes
William Simpson visited Jerusalem in 1868, following a trip to Cairo where he had accompanied the Prince and Princess of Wales. By 1872, Simpson had completed enough drawings for an exhibition organised by Colnaghi's in Pall Mall.
It occured to me at the time that as I was procuring quite new materials regarding Jerusalem, I would utilize my leisure wholly at that place and make sufficient sketches for an exhibition.
William Simpson, The autobiography of William Simpson, London, 1903, p.211.
It is probable that the present work is one of these 40 exhibited drawings.
