Footnotes
Thomas Whitcombe was a noted and prolific marine painter who exhibited fifty-six works at the Royal Academy between 1783 and 1824.
His range of work embraced naval engagements, ship portraits and coastal scenes both within the United Kingdom and abroad. The topography in his work is always well observed and the depiction of the ships themselves technically correct, a legacy of time spent in dockyards studying the subject matter.
