Footnotes
The original self-portrait by Reynolds was painted, circa 1780, for the Royal Academy of Arts, commissioned to hang in the Assembly Room at Somerset House. It was an image that was frequently copied and engraved. The bust included in the portrait was probably from Reynolds' own studio, bought from the Thomond sale at Christie's in May 1821.
