Footnotes

There are many artists with the surname Smith working in the 18th Century so it has not been possible to ascertain which of them is responsible for the present lot. However, stylistically it appears closer to a French technique than that of the British miniaturists. The date of 1756 is puzzling in that it does not fit with the style of the sitter's costume, which is typical of the 1780s.
