Footnotes
The present portrait falls into the group of miniatures by Hall known as "Les têtes de Fantaisie" and painted in 1785-6. These commissions gave Hall the freedom to paint the prettiest models in whatever guise he fancied without the pressures of having to focus on obtaining a true likeness. For two similar portraits depicting the same model see P. Jean-Richard, Miniatures sur ivoire, Musée du Louvre et Musée d'Orsay, 1994, p.177, nos.305 & 306.
