Attributed to Francis Sykes (British, fl.mid 18th Century)

A Gentleman, called John, Baron Kingston, wearing purple coat, yellow trimmed waistcoat, white lace cravat and powdered wig worn en queue with a black ribbon.
Enamel, gold bracelet frame, the reverse engraved with sitter's name John/ Ld Baron/ Kingston.
Oval, 35mm (1 3/8in) high

Footnotes

The present lot shows a similar technique to an enamel of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute in the Gilbert Collection, London. This enamel, after Allan Ramsay's portrait of Bute is given to the artist Francis Sykes whose own identity is somewhat confused.

The identity of the sitter as John, Baron Kingston appears untenable on the basis that the two Barons Kingston with the christian name of John died in 1676 and 1728, therefore predating the present lot.
