Jean André Rouquet (Swiss, 1701-58)

Two portraits, possibly of the same sitter, wearing yellow robe, open at the front to reveal white underdress, held with a jewelled clasp, she wears a pink shawl in one version.
Enamel, one, signed and numbered on reverse with monogram, JR 2, gilt-metal mount, the other in reeded gold frame.
Oval, 45mm (1 3/4in) high (2)

Footnotes

It is possible that Rouquet painted two versions of the sitter. Here the two women have slight variants in hairstyle; the version numbered '2' appears to require a final application of colour for the cloak. This pair are an interesting insight into Rouquet's working practice.
