Footnotes
Gaetano Manini was a Milanese history painter who worked in England from 1755. He exhibited in London 1761-75. The Royal Collection contains his double portrait of Augusta and her husband, Frederick, Prince of Wales, in profile, facing one another (see Richard Walker, Miniatures in the Collection of her Majesty the Queen, 1992, p.249, no.708. The present lot is unusual for Manini in that it appears to be painted from life rather than a retrospective copy.
