Footnotes
The present lot was part of a collection of Stuart relics formed by Major Cyril Sloane-Stanley, a descendant of Sir Hans Sloane from whom some of the pieces were inherited. The collection is discussed by Basil Long in his article Stuart Relics in the Possession of Major Cyril Sloane-Stanley, The Collector, February 1930, vol.IX, no.33.
The enamel is similar to other examples in the Royal Collection, painted after the King's execution and portraying him as both King and Martyr.
